Non-life insurers report marginal rise in gross direct premium underwritten for August

The General Insurance Council in its latest data (Provisional) has showed that non-life insurers reported 4.22% rise in gross direct premium underwritten at Rs 23,846.04 crore for the month of August 2025 (excluding specialised companies - Agricultural Insurance Company of India and ECGC) as compared to Rs 22,879.72 crore in the August 2024. 

Of the total, general insurance companies, with market share of 85.63%, garnered gross direct premium underwritten of Rs 20488.38 crore in the month under review as compared to Rs 19651.52 crore in the corresponding month of previous year, registering a growth of 4.26%. Among all, premium of National Insurance Co up by 44.16%, Navi General Insurance Co up by 28.99%, Shriram General Insurance Co up by 28.32%, Generali Central Insurance Company up by 25.82%, Liberty General Insurance Co up by 21.39% and Bajaj Allianz General Insurance Co up by 18.83%, while Kshema General insurance Co down by 93.88%, Raheja QBE General Insurance Co down by 69.07% and HDFC Ergo General Insurance Co down by 38.15%.

Standalone health insurers, with market share of 12.04%, garnered gross direct premium underwritten of Rs 3,357.66 crore in August 2025 as compared to Rs 3,228.20 crore in August 2024, i.e. up by 4.01%. Among all, Aditya Birla Health Insurance Co up by 37.09%, ManipalCigna Health Insurance Co up by 5.00%, Niva bupa health insurance company up by 2.74%, Star Health & Allied Insurance Co up by 1.85%, while Care Health Insurance Co down by 5.48%. 

Specialised insurers showed de-growth of 33.87% in gross direct premium underwritten at Rs 1106.93 crore in August 2025 as compared to Rs 1673.9 crore in the August 2024. Within the specialised insurers, premium of Agricultural Insurance Company of India down by 37.60%, while premium of ECGC up by 78.39% in the month of August this year.
