Life insurers report 5% fall in new business premiums in August 2025

Life Insurance Council in its latest data (Provisional) has showed that life insurers posted 5.16% year-on-year (Y-o-Y) fall in new business premiums (NBP) in the month of August 2025 at Rs 30958.77 crore as compared to Rs 32644.09 crore in the year-ago period. Out of which, the private insurers’ premium increased by 12.01% Y-o-Y to Rs 14936 crore in August 2025 from Rs 13334.99 crore. On the other hand, Life Insurance Corporation of India’s premium decreased 17.02% to Rs 16022.77 crore in August 2025 from Rs 19309.1 crore in August 2024. 

Of the total premium collected by life insurance companies in the month of August 2025, individual single premium stood at Rs 4092.04 crore as against Rs 4302.58 crore in 2024, i.e. down by 4.89%. Individual Non-Single premium declined 0.36% to Rs 9126.81 crore in August 2025 as compared to Rs 9160.08 crore in August 2024, Group Single Premium stood at Rs 15303.4 crore in August 2025. Group Non-Single Premium stood at Rs 461.97 crore in August 2025 and Group Yearly Renewable Premium increased to Rs 1974.55 crore in August 2025. 

Among the private insurance companies, SBI Life Insurance Company reported 22.83% Y-o-Y growth in premium to Rs 3321.24 crore in August 2025, HDFC Life Insurance Company’s premium stood at Rs 3063.85 crore in August 2025, up by 9.53% over August 2024, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance posted 17.70% Y-o-Y growth to Rs 1776.26 crore in August 2025, Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company reported 55.88% growth in premiums to 1484.88 crore in August 2025 and Axis Max Life Insurance’s premium stood at Rs 1143.71 crore in August 2025.
