Indices trade in positive territory in afternoon session

Domestic equity indices traded in positive territory in the afternoon session, amid a fall in crude oil prices in international markets. Crude oil prices fell after Saudi Arabia reportedly offered ship-to-ship crude transfers after pipeline hit. However, Indices remained volatile after the U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time in three years. Meanwhile, cautiousness also prevailed as the U.S. House of Representatives passed a legislation targeting Russia’s energy sector, individuals and shadow fleet of tankers, including authorising the U.S. President to impose tariffs of up to 100% on India and other countries for buying oil and gas from Russia. 

Sensex was trading slightly higher, while Nifty traded with gains of over a quarter percent, amid buying in stocks of Reliance Industries, Larsen & Toubro, ITC, Axis Bank, and Bharti Airtel. On the BSE sectoral front, traders were seen piling up positions in Realty, Capital Goods, Industrials, Auto, and Power, while selling was witnessed in Bankex, Energy, Oil & Gas, and IT. On the global front, Asian markets were mixed following negative cues from US markets overnight.  

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 74432.94, up by 96.49 points or 0.13% after trading in a range of 74163.95 and 74589.80. There were 19 stocks advancing against 11 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Realty up by 1.78%, Capital Goods up by 1.55%, Industrials up by 1.33%, Auto up by 1.17% and Power up by 1.12%, while Bankex down by 0.20%, Energy down by 0.18%, Oil & Gas down by 0.18% and IT down by 0.05% were the top losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were Eternal up by 2.34%, Bharat Electronics up by 1.71%, Interglobe Aviation up by 1.39%, Maruti Suzuki India up by 1.11% and Mahindra & Mahindra up by 0.98%. On the flip side, HDFC Bank down by 1.16%, Titan Company down by 0.97%, Hindustan Unilever down by 0.59%, State Bank of India down by 0.46% and ICICI Bank down by 0.44% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, India and Bhutan discussed key areas of bilateral cooperation, including development partnership, energy, trade and connectivity as External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held talks with his Bhutanese counterpart D N Dhungyel in Bumthang on September 16, 2026. Jaishankar is on a two-day official visit to Bhutan beginning September 16. During the visit, he is scheduled to call on the King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and the Prime Minister of Bhutan Tshering Tobgay.   

Jaishankar said ‘our conversation focused on advancing our multifaceted engagement in development partnership, energy, trade, connectivity, culture and people-to-people ties. Today’s discussions reflected the trust, goodwill and warmth of our ties.’

The Ministry of External Affairs said the visit is in keeping with the tradition of regular high-level exchanges between India and Bhutan, and to further strengthen the existing close ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 23288.05, up by 70.45 points or 0.30% after trading in a range of 23193.65 and 23325.40. There were 35 stocks advancing against 15 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were HDFC Life Insurance up by 4.87%, Dr. Reddy's up by 2.75%, SBI Life Insurance up by 2.72%, Bharat Electronics up by 2.20% and Eternal up by 2.02%. On the flip side, ONGC down by 1.49%, HDFC Bank down by 0.90%, Titan Company down by 0.74%, HCL Technologies down by 0.54% and Coal India down by 0.54% were the top losers.

Asian markets were trading mixed; Nikkei 225 slipped 33 points or 0.05% to 63,890.00, Shanghai Composite weakened 16.69 points or 0.43% to 3,874.91, Hang Seng declined 231.78 points or 0.94% to 24,482.00 and KOSPI dropped 6.90 points or 0.1% to 6,711.07. However, Taiwan Weighted added 439.1 points or 0.95% to 46,288.00, Jakarta Composite gained 26.76 points or 0.41% to 6,463.61 and Straits Times rose 13.79 points or 0.24% to 5,649.20.
