Congress appoints Devender Yadav as interim chief of Delhi unit

Former Delhi MLA and Punjab Congress in-charge Devender Yadav was appointed as the interim president of Delhi Congress. The party said that Yadav will also continue his role as All India Congress Committee in-charge for Punjab.

Devender Yadav’s appointment comes two days after Arvinder Singh Lovely resigned as Delhi Congress chief citing internal conflicts. Lovely submitted his resignation to party chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday. In his resignation letter, he said that he found himself ‘handicapped’ as all unanimous decisions taken by senior Delhi unit leaders have been ‘unilaterally vetoed’ by AICC Delhi in-charge Deepak Babaria. He also cited the alliance with the AAP as one of the reasons for his decision. Yadav clarified that he was not joining any other political party. While, the BJP said it was an ‘unnatural alliance' forged by the leadership of AAP and Congress to ‘shield their corruption', but their party workers had not accepted it.

Devender Yadav, who won from the Badli assembly constituency in Delhi in 2008 and 2013 and lost to Ajesh Yadav of AAP in 2015. The Congress is contesting the Lok Sabha polls in alliance with the AAP in Delhi. The AAP is contesting four seats in Delhi (East Delhi, West Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi), leaving three to the Congress (Chandni Chowk, Northeast Delhi, Northwest Delhi).
